One of Ghana’s most popular singers, Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has been arrested hours after he said he was on the run over fears of his life. He had posted on Facebook that his "life is in danger". The police accuse him and two others, Eric Venator and Kojo Owusu Koranteng of "spreading false information" over an alleged gun attack on the reggae star. He faces charges of publication of false news and causing fear and panic that could see him being heavily fined or jailed for 5 years if found guilty.
In a Facebook post, the artist made reference to a prophecy that was made by Bishop Stephen Kwesi Appiah of New Life Kingdom Chapel that he would be shot dead on October 18, 2021. Bishop Stephen Kwesi Appiah is also facing a charge of causing fear and panic.
Shatta Wale is best known for his collaboration with Beyoncé on her Lion King album, which expanded his fan base across Africa and globally. The 37-year-old dancehall singer has not commented on the allegations against him.
