(Les Disques) Bongo Joe – the Swiss label that takes its name from the American street musician George ‘Bongo Joe’ Coleman – has always been a rock-solid musical quality measure to date. Just think of Altin Gün, Derya Yildirim, Lalalar or L’Eclair. Their reissues – from Walter Gavitt Ferguson’s calypso to the succulent ‘Soul Sega’ collectors – are also indispensable. Recently, ‘Antologia vol.1′ by África Negra, for four decades the most important and authentic ambassadors of the music of São Tomé and Príncipe, was released. Their soukous, which they chase through Marshall amplifiers and guitar pedals, sounds like the legendary JBs – James Brown’s backing band – sounded in the late ’60s/early ’70s.
