Bangaologia – Coréon Dú | Afropolitan Festival 2020

NL | Het Afrikaanse continent is altijd een plaats geweest die een diep gevoel van verwondering en fantasie oproept. Omdat het de thuisbasis is van oude beschavingen, wordt het beschouwd als de “geboorteplaats van de mensheid”. Maar zou het ook de geboorteplaats van stijl kunnen zijn? Bangaologia wil de raison d’être achter de recente groei van de Afrikaanse esthetiek in de wereld verkennen, vanuit de meest onverwachte plaatsen. De docu maakt een reis die zich uitstrekt van Angola over de VS en Europa om te ontdekken waarom deze mysterieuze Afrikaanse “it factor” zo velen in en uit Afrika heeft geïnspireerd. Regisseur Coréon Dú wordt door Forbes beschouwd als een van de 15 meest invloedrijke jonge creatievelingen uit Afrika en kreeg dan ook de bijnaam “het best bewaarde geheim van Afrika”.

Na de documentaire volgt een debat over het thema van de Afrikaanse esthetiek. Welke invloed heeft die op de internationale modewereld? En waar houdt die invloed op en waar begint de culturele toe-eigening?

Bangaologia souhaite explorer la raison d’être du récent essor de l’esthétique africaine dans le monde, depuis les lieux les plus inattendus. Le documentaire nous embarque de l’Angola à l’Europe, en passant par les États-Unis, pour découvrir pourquoi ce mystérieux « it factor » africain a inspiré tant de personnes en Afrique et ailleurs. Le réalisateur Coréon Dú est considéré par Forbes comme l’un des 15 jeunes créatifs les plus influents d’Afrique et a reçu le surnom de « secret le mieux gardé d’Afrique ».

Après le documentaire, un débat suivra sur le thème de l’esthétique africaine. Quelle influence a-t-elle sur la mode internationale ? Où s’arrête cette influence et où commence l’appropriation culturelle ?

The documentary takes us on a journey from Angola to the USA and Europe to discover why this mysterious African ‘it factor’ has inspired so many, both in Africa itself and beyond. Forbes describes director Coréon Dú as one of the fifteen most influential young creatives in Africa, and he has also been dubbed ‘Africa’s best-kept secret’.

The documentary is followed by a discussion on the theme of the African aesthetic. What is its influence on the international fashion world? And where does that influence end and cultural appropriation begin?
