Het is Mali in begin jaren zestig, enkele jaren na de onafhankelijkheid van de Fransen in 1960. De jeugd van Bamako, de hoofdstad van Mali, droomt van politieke vernieuwing en danst de twist op uit het Westen geïmporteerde rock-‘n-roll. Samba, een jonge socialist, valt voor de pittige Lara tijdens een van zijn missies naar de het platteland. Om aan haar gedwongen huwelijk te ontsnappen, vlucht Lara met Samba naar de hoofdstad. Maar haar echtgenoot laat het duo niet met rust en de revolutie brengt al snel pijnlijke desillusies met zich mee.

Africadelic is een jaarlijks festival op en rondom Internationale Afrikadag (25 mei) waar de creativiteit, diversiteit en kracht van Afrika wordt gevierd. Het Africadelic Festival is een ode aan het Afrikaanse continent en zijn wereldwijde diaspora, en presenteert een showcase van en reflectie op de culturele rijkdom en de invloed die Afrodescendants, mensen van Afrikaanse afkomst, hebben op de mondiale cultuur en samenleving. Van 24-31 mei 2023 biedt het festival weer een week vol concerten, films, talks en andere inspirerende evenementen, waaronder deze speciale vertoning van 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗶 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁.

𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗶 𝗧𝘄𝗶𝘀𝘁 is a romance fraught with the drama of political change in 1960s Mali, infused with the musical energy of that decade. Samba, a young, idealistic socialist, works toward creating a more just nation by day and dances with his spirited girlfriend Lara, who he met during one of his missions to the bush by night. To escape her forced marriage, Lara has secretly fled with Samba to the city. But her husband won’t let them be and the Revolution soon brings painful disillusions as they dream of a future together. The film’s sensibility is inspired by the vibrant images, patterns, and compositions of famed Malian photographer, Malick Sidibé.

Africadelic is an annual festival on and around International Africa Day (May 25) celebrating the creativity, diversity and resilience of Africa. The Africadelic Festival is an ode to the African continent and its worldwide diaspora, and features a showcase of the cultural riches and the impacts that Afrodescendants, i.e. people of African descent, have on global culture and society.
