Africadelic Festival 2020 (online edition!)

Due to the current COVID-19 measures, we organize the Africadelic Festival completely online this year! Our annual celebration of International Africa Day on 25 May will be a 12 hours digital festival (from 12pm to 12am). We do this through a live streaming event (via the Instagram account of Paradiso Amsterdam) with performances and talks by African artists from both the continent and the diaspora, from their home, studio or another venue in their neighborhood!

At the same time our co-host Afrispectives will have interactive talks with creatives from African descent via their Instagram account and other platforms. Follow their account for more info. Last but not least, from 24-26 May we will offer a great selection of films from, or in support of, people of African descent on Cineville and Vimeo!

Given the recent death of the legendary Cameroonian musician Manu Dibango – Officiel, this edition of Africadelic also pays a tribute to his legacy.

☀ TALKS

Before their performance, many of the artists above will be interviewed via the Instagram page of Paradiso (instagram.com/paradiso). In addition, Afrispectives will host interactive talks via their Instagram page (instagram.com/afrispectives) with, among others, Simone Sims, Richard Kofi, Fuad Hassen, Adeola Naomi Aderemi & Christopher Tijan Smith about the role of art and creativity in times of isolation. There will also be an online screening and aftertalk of the short film EUphoria by Black Speaks Back.

☀ GENERAL

Africadelic is an annual festival in Paradiso Amsterdam on 25 May – International Africa Dag – that celebrates the unifying force, creativity and cultural diversity in (and from) Africa. Africadelic is an ode to the motherland, its cultural richness and diversity, and the influence that Africans have on global (popular) culture. The programme focuses on (live) music, visual arts, dance, film, performances and DJ sets.

In addition, Africadelic always take a critical look at the world and the continent in the form of interactive talks and interviews. Artists and activists come and discuss various social issues that are at play in Africa and the African diaspora. This year will of course also deal with the socio-economic and political consequences of the corona virus in various African countries and the cultural and musical sector in particular.

Africadelic 2020 is a co-production between Mano A Mano Produções (Luanda), Paradiso Amsterdam/Ticket to the Tropics, Pllek Live Stage, Afrispectives, Caribbean Creativity, Cineville and the Keep On Pushing Crew.

Vanwege de COVID-19 maatregelen organiseren we het Africadelic Festival dit jaar geheel online! Onze jaarlijkse viering van Internationale Afrikadag op 25 mei wordt een twaalf uur durend digitaal festival (van 12:00 tot 00:00 uur). We doen dit door middel van een live streaming event (via het Instagramaccount van Paradiso Amsterdam) met optredens en talks door Afrikaanse artiesten van zowel het continent als de diaspora, vanuit hun huis, studio of andere venue in hun buurt!

Daarnaast heeft onze co-host Afrispectives verschillende interactieve talks met creatives via o.a hun Instagramaccount. Verder bieden we van 24-26 mei (gratis!) een mooie selectie van films van makers van Afrikaanse afkomst op Cineville en Vimeo!

☀ ALGEMEEN

Africadelic is een jaarlijks festival in Paradiso Amsterdam op 25 mei – Internationale Afrikadag – waarin de verbindende kracht, creativiteit en culturele diversiteit in (en uit) Afrika gevierd worden. Africadelic is een ode aan het moederland, haar culturele rijkdom en diversiteit, en de invloed die Afrikanen hebben op de mondiale (pop)cultuur. Het programma richt zich op (live) muziek, beeldende kunst, dans, film, performances en dj-sets.

Daarnaast werpt Africadelic altijd een kritische blik op de staat van de wereld en het continent in de vorm van interactieve talks en interviews. Artiesten en activisten spreken over uiteenlopende maatschappelijke vraagstukken die spelen in Afrika en de Afrikaanse diaspora. Dit jaar zal het uiteraard ook gaan over de socio-economische en politieke gevolgen van het coronavirus in verschillende Afrikaanse landen en de culturele- en muzikale sector in het bijzonder.
