Christianity & Islam Were Used To Enslave Africans | The Dark History of Slave Trade | Kofi Ras Ofi

What happens when the history of slavery is told from inside a former slave-trading centre? In this powerful and deeply confronting tour of Mobee Family Slave Relics in Badagry, Nigeria, guide and artist Kofi “Ras Ofi”@RASOFIOFFICIAL takes Africa Web TV through the physical evidence and oral history surrounding the African slave trade.

From slave chains, neck collars, branding irons and restraints to stories of family separation, forced labour, punishment and the loss of African names, Ras Ofi delivers an uncompromising account of what slavery did to African identity.

But this conversation goes far beyond the relics.

Ras Ofi challenges viewers to confront difficult questions about African participation in the slave trade, European involvement, Arab slave trading, colonialism, religion, cultural identity, reparations and Africa’s resources.

He explains why he rejects the names and religious identities imposed on Africans, why he says his real name is Kofi while his “slave name” is Simon, and why he believes Africa must reclaim its identity and determine its own future.

One of the most provocative moments comes when he is asked a difficult question:
Who is actually to blame for the slave trade: Europeans, Arabs, African rulers, or all of them? His answer is blunt: he argues that there were multiple sides to the system and that some African leaders participated while others were attacked or captured by force.

The discussion also turns to reparations. Kofi Ras Ofi argues that the issue is about more than money. In his view, recognition, an apology and the freedom for African nations to control and develop their own resources are central to the question.

And then comes one of the most controversial parts of the conversation: Ras Ofi’s rejection of Christianity and Islam and his argument that religion was used as part of enslavement.

This is not a comfortable history lesson. It is a conversation about slavery, identity, power, religion, colonialism, memory and the future of Africa.

Watch until the end and tell us:
Who do you believe should bear responsibility for the Atlantic and trans-Saharan slave trades?
And if reparations are discussed, what should they actually look like?
