Rwanda Has Risen From The Ashes To Become Africa’s Pride | Professor PLO Lumumba

Rwanda Has Risen From The Ashes To Become Africa’s Pride | Professor PLO Lumumba

“If we are not careful, the only thing we learn from history… is that we learn nothing from history.”
In this powerful and deeply reflective address, PLO Lumumba speaks at the Kwibuka 32 remembrance commemorations of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, held at the University of Nairobi. Lumumba delivers a sobering critique of global inaction and selective memory, reminding the world how “Africa watched, the United Nations watched, the big powers watched” during one of history’s darkest moments.
He challenges the so-called guardians of international law, describing their actions as inconsistent and unreliable, while warning that genocidal patterns are still visible in different parts of the world today.
The speech also reflects on:
• The legacy of slavery and colonialism
• The genocide of the Herero and Nama in Namibia
• The failure of global institutions to act decisively
• The danger of denial and historical amnesia
Yet amid this reflection, Lumumba highlights a powerful story of resilience:
“Kigali has become our pride… when you want to see how technology is being used to good effect, you go to Kigali.”
Just 32 years after the genocide, Rwanda stands as a symbol of recovery, unity, and progress.
