Bonga, hét icoon van de Angolese muziek komt naar Rotterdam! De 77-jarige zanger is geen onbekende van de stad. Toen hij in de jaren ’70 wegens zijn activistische houding tegen de Portugese regering verplicht was Angola te ontvluchten, kwam hij naar Rotterdam. Hier nam hij bij Kaapverdiaans platenlabel Morabeza Records zijn eerste plaat Angola 72 op.

Hij wordt ook wel gezien als de koning van de Semba, de basis van de Braziliaanse samba. Hij combineert deze stijl met melancholische morna en kosmopolitische Afropop. Inmiddels heeft Bonga rond de 30 platen uitgebracht en samengewerkt met de grootse artiesten als Cesária Évora.

Bonga, one of the icons of Angolese music finally plays in Rotterdam! The 77-year-old singer is no stranger to the city. When he was forced to flee Angola in the 1970s because of his activist attitude against the Portuguese government, he came to Rotterdam. Here he recorded his first album Angola 72 with Cape Verde record label Morabeza Records.

He is also known as the king of Semba, the basis of the Brazilian samba. He combines this style with melancholic morna and cosmopolitan Afropop. Meanwhile, Bonga has released around 30 albums and collaborated with the great artists such as Cesária Évora.

This concert is a collaboration between Podium Grounds, Morabeza Records and Poppodium Annabel.
