DESCRIPTION:De achtkoppige Ghanese band Santrofi (vernoemd naar een mythische vogel) is een van de grote namen in de highlife\, de combinatie van traditionele West-Afrikaanse ritmes met westerse jazz. Al vóór hun debuutalbum Alewa (2020) was de buzz rond Santrofi zo groot dat de band op festivals als WOMAD en Roskilde stond. Begin 2025 kwam het tweede album Making Moves – een prima titel\, want vanaf de eerste maten van openingstrack Amina sta je al te dansen. Dat geldt ook voor het titelnummer\, waarop Santrofi samenwerkt met afrobeat-sterren AratheJay en Kofi Jamar. Let the bird fly!

Santrofi maakt vintage highlife\, funk en afrobeat en is een collectief van bekende jonge muzikanten uit de Ghanese muziekwereld. De achtkoppige band werd opgericht door bassist en producer Emmanuel Ofori\, die zijn sporen verdiende bij Ebo Taylor\, Pat Thomas & Kwashibu Area Band en Gyedu-Blay Ambolley. Santrofi’s missie: Highlife terug op de kaart zetten; niet alleen voor de wereld\, maar ook naar Ghana. \nNadat ze hun energieke discografie al eerder naar meer dan honderd shows in heel Europa brachten\, keert Santrofi nu terug naar Amsterdam met nieuwe muziek. DESCRIPTION:Just like the mythological bird of the same name\, Ghanaian Santrofi flutters through an exceptionally beautiful musical landscape: cheerful\, colourful and above all very energetic. With a passion for vintage highlife grooves and an infectious funk touch\, they are going to revive Ghana’s golden musical era for the second time at GROUNDS. \nSantrofi was formed in 2019 by a group of dedicated young musicians with a shared love for the music they grew up with: highlife. This supergroup\, led by charismatic producer-bassist Emmanuel Kwadwo Ofori\, unites eight of Accra’s most gifted musicians. Their aim is to celebrate classic highlife music\, in all its diverse variants and assimilated styles from early period Afro-Cuban and calypso strains to funky soul workouts and the Nigerian influences of afrobeat and juju grooves. Expertly executed with the requisite rippling guitars\, tight horn section\, driving percussion and fine harmony vocals. \nTheir new album Making Moves (2025) is both a celebration of Santrofi’s roots and a leap into the future of highlife\, bringing a new vibe of funk driven dancefloor bangers and soulful songs reflecting on life directly from the streets of Accra.
