In het kader van haar onderzoek rond voedselveiligheid heeft ze een internationaal netwerk opgebouwd\, oa in sub-Sahara Afrika. \nKoen Bostoen is professor Afrikaanse Taalkunde en Swahili aan de Universiteit Gent. Zijn onderzoek is toegespitst op de Bantoetalen en op de studie van vroege Afrikaanse geschiedenis. \nPatrick Van Damme is een tropisch-landbouwkundige met uitgebreide ervaring in Afrika. Hij werkte en woonde een tijd in Senegal en Togo. \nInge Brinkman werkt aan de UGent als professor Afrika-Studies. DESCRIPTION:KOKOROKO is een afrobeatband uit Zuid-Londen bestaande uit acht fantastische bandleden. De groep staat onder leiding van trompettist Sheila Maurice-Grey\, die de jonge bandleden (allen afkomstig van verschillende jazzconservatoria in de stad) bij elkaar bracht.  \nHoe snel bands momenteel een plek kunnen veroveren op de belangrijke podia bewijst het jazzcollectief KOKOROKO. Met hun track Abusey Junction op de baanbrekende compilatie We Out Here\, het dubbelalbum dat de jonge Britse jazz in 2018 in één keer pontificaal op de wereldkaart zette\, verkregen ze zoveel streams op de digitale kanalen (alleen op YouTube al meer dan 47 miljoen!) dat er een ware hype rond de band ontstond. \nDe muziek van KOKOROKO klinkt als een moderne variant op West-Afrikaanse muziek\, geïnspireerd door iconische artiesten als Fela Kuti\, Ebo Taylor en Tony Allen. Having immigrated to Portugal and the Netherlands\, he has become the icon of the Cape Verdean community in Rotterdam with his warm\, cheerful music. Be the first to visit this new hotspot during this screening!  \nAbout the film\nDjon África aka Tibars aka Miguel (Miguel Moreira) is a warm hearted young Portuguese man of Cape Verde descent who lives a carefree life until one day he is stopped on the street by a complete stranger who tells him he looks just like his father\, “a player and a crook”. Shocked by this new information he goes home and asks his grandma\, who brought him up\, about it. There\, he learns how his father was expelled to Cape Verde after serving time in prison and decides to travel to his country of origin for the very first time to learn more about his dad and his roots. \nDjon África catches the complexity of a second-generation immigrant identity. The sense of loneliness and displacement push the protagonist to take an inner and empirical journey to Cape Verde. Miguel’s discovery of his origins goes together with the exploration of the island. As he traverses warm and rural landscapes\, encounters local people\, and enjoys colorful parties\, he connects with a part of himself he had never embraced before.

Drawing from their unique backgrounds their repertoire spans from traditional to contemporary including new compositions. \nVintani Nafassi  is a percussionist\, composer and professional dancer from Mozambique. His main focus is African traditional music and dance. He has taught music and dance as well as performed in Zimbabwe\, Swaziland\, Brazil\, China and Reunion Island. He was a professional dancer and musician for 10 years in the National Dance and Song Company of Mozambique. Currently he works as a choreographer\, musician\, song writer and composer\, and as a teacher of traditional songs\, drums and dance at the African Music Department of the University of Cape Town.  \nSumalgy Nuro is  a Mozambican Maputo-based urban musician and dancer with a strong  background in traditional African arts who has embraced contemporary  music and dance through music-dance studies at MoNo Pedagogical  University (Maputo\, 2013-2014) Kulturskolen Frederikstadt  (Norway\,  2014) and postgraduate studies at the University of Cape Town (South  Africa\, 2019 – 2021).  His interest is in the integration of music and  dance in multi-media works in which real time music and dance  composition forms the basis for a practice in which visual and audio  elements are seen as part of a continuum rather than kept in separate  boxes. DESCRIPTION:## Het concert van Mulatu Astatke maakt deel uit van Africadelic Festival 2022. Africadelic is een jaarlijks festival rondom Internationale Afrikadag (25 mei) waar de creativiteit\, diversiteit en vrijheid van Afrika wordt gevierd. Het programma bestaat uit muziek en film en werpt een kritische blik op de staat van het continent in de vorm van talks. Het concert van Mulatu Astatke is het eerste aangekondigde programmaonderdeel van het festival in 2022\, binnenkort volgen meer bevestigingen. ## \nMulatu Astatke staat bekend als de vader van de Ethiopische jazzmuziek\, en dat is niet voor niets. Op alle belangrijke instrumentale albums uit de hoogtijdagen van de Ethiopische jazz in de jaren ’70 speelt hij mee. De inmiddels 78-jarige muzikant kreeg zijn muzikale vorming in Londen en New York\, en in Boston was Astatke de eerste Afrikaanse student aan het gerenommeerde Berklee College of Music. Daar combineerde hij jazz\, latin en traditionele Ethiopische muziek. Terug in zijn thuisland introduceerde hij instrumenten als de vibrafoon\, keyboard\, conga’s en de bongo in de muziek. Maar het zijn vooral de groovende\, Ethiopische melodielijnen die Astatke in de Amerikaanse jazz bracht waar hij om geroemd wordt. Hij stond met grootheden als Duke Ellington op het podium. Nog altijd inspireert zijn muziek menig muzikant en zijn liedjes worden dan ook veelvuldig als samples gebruikt door artiesten als Nas\, Damian Marley en Kanye West. Bij het grote internationale publiek brak Astatke (opnieuw) door\, toen vanaf eind jaren ’90 de Ethio-jazz heruitgaven van de compilatieserie ‘Éthiopiques’ verschenen en zijn muziek in 2005 werd gebruikt voor de soundtrack van Jim Jarmusch’ film ‘Broken Flowers’. In de jaren vijftig\, toen de Democratische Republiek Congo nog onder streng Belgisch bewind stond\, besloot een generatie Congolese muzikanten populaire muziek te gebruiken om de koloniale onderdrukking te bestrijden. Ze combineerden traditionele Afrikaanse ritmes met Afro-Cubaanse muziek om een muzikale genre te creëren dat bekend zou komen te staan als Congolese rumba\, een aanstekelijke groove die een ruimte van vrijheid en verzet bood tegen de wreedheid en vernedering waarmee de Congolezen werden geconfronteerd door de Belgische onderdrukking. Na deze geboorte hield de opzwepende Congolese rumba-beat nooit meer op. Congolese rumba begeleidde het land bij de zoektocht naar onafhankelijkheid en smeedde zo de identiteit van een hele natie. Ook veroverde rumba het hele continent met zijn boeiende gitaargeluiden en produceerde het het beroemdste Afrikaanse onafhankelijkheidslied ooit gemaakt. \nAan de ene kant is 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 het verbluffende verhaal van hoe de Congolese rumba sound zich in eerste instantie ontwikkelde en later Afrika veroverde. Aan de andere kant is de film een ​​emotioneel statement over hoe muziek barrières kan doorbreken\, wonden kan helen en hoop kan brengen. After its birth\, the electrifying Congolese rumba beat never stopped. Congolese rumba\ncarried the country through its quest for independence\, producing the most famous African independence anthem ever created\, conquering the entire continent with its captivating guitar sounds\, and forging the identity of an entire nation. \nOn one level\, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 is the stunning story of how the Congolese rumba sound developed and later conquered Africa.
