Al meer dan 50 jaar is Ladysmith Black Mambazo befaamd als a-cappellakoor. De groep bezingt op onnavolgbare wijze de strijd en passie van het Zuid-Afrikaanse volk. \nZe zingen volgens een van de belangrijkste tradities binnen de Zoeloemuziek: de meerstemmige zang of Isicathamiya. Zwarte mijnwerkers\, ver van huis\, vonden hierin ontspanning en Joseph Shabalala\, voorman van Ladysmith Black Mambazo\, kneedde die traditie tot iets onweerstaanbaars. Christelijke hymnes en Amerikaanse gospel komen samen en vormen een haarzuivere en trotse zangstijl. \nDe naam Ladysmith Black Mambazo ontstond na het winnen van veel zangcompetities. Ladysmith is de thuishaven van de Shabalala familie. Black refereert aan de sterke\, zwarte ossen op de boerderij. \nMambazo is het Zoeloewoord voor bijl\, waarmee zij spreekwoordelijk de tegenstanders in zangcompetities een kopje kleiner maakten. \nDe groep brak eind jaren 80 door toen Paul Simon enkele songs met hen opnam voor zijn baanbrekende Graceland album. In 1987 won de groep een Grammy Award voor Shaka Zulu en kreeg daarmee wereldwijde erkenning. Sindsdien zijn er miljoenen albums verkocht. De zangers reizen de hele wereld rond en tussendoor zingen ze met Emmylou Harris\, Zap Mama … of stonden ze strijdbaar aan de zijde van Nelson Mandela.
