But like other Malian musicians like Samba Touré and Bassekou Kouyaté\, Vieux Farka Touré also takes on the important task of conveying Mali’s culture and traditions to a wider audience. His album Mon Pays (2013)\, for instance\, was a serene ode to the splendour of his homeland. And in 2022\, he returned to the roots of traditional Songhai music with his album Les Racines. \nThat same year\, he and Khruangbin also revisited his father’s oeuvre on the album Ali. This was noticed by Elton John\, who called it one of the best albums of the year. DESCRIPTION:Afel Bocoum is among the last of a breakthrough generation of African musicians who were the first to cross-pollinate their own traditional music with the new sounds that arrived from all over the world throughout the 20th century. At Grounds\, the Malian singer and guitarist will take us on a magical and introspective journey through his career. \nFrom an early age\, Bocoum became captivated by the music his father played on the njarka (one-string violin) and njurkel (small lute) in a style known as Seygalare; it immediately inspired Bocoum’s own take on desert blues. Bocoum’s music rolls and rocks\, graceful\, unforced and minimal by design\, and his message – in the face of an uncertain and turbulent world\, and a homeland struggling with jihad\, poverty and tribal war – urges hope\, solidarity and unity. Many of his songs address the need for social justice in his country and speak of music’s historic role in the Sahel region as a means of disseminating information. \nAt the age of 13\, he was recruited into the band of Ali Farka Touré\, the doyen of desert blues guitarist-singers\, with whom he composed many songs and performed extensively. His debut album ‘Alkibar’ (1999\, World Circuit) propelled him to international recognition\, leading him to work with Damon Albarn & Toumani Diabaté on 2002’s Mali Music\, as well as contributing regularly to the famed Africa Express projects\, and collaborating with Bela Fleck\, Habib Koité\, Bassekou Kouyaté and many others. \nHis last album\, Lindé\, released in 2020\, is a remarkable blend of deep tradition and audacious innovation. DESCRIPTION:Vrijwel jaarlijks komen The African Mamas naar ons land en daar is een zeer goede reden voor: “Een onvergetelijk mooi concert”\, schreef Musicalnieuws over een van hun hartverwarmende\, energieke shows. \nDeze keer brengen de zangeressen en hun band een ode aan The Big Five van de Zuid-Afrikaanse muziek. Allereerst is dat natuurlijk Miriam Makeba\, die met recht de eretitel Mama Africa kreeg met onvergetelijke klassiekers als ‘Pata Pata’\, ‘Malaika’ en ‘The Click Song’. Verder wordt er werk gebracht van zwaargewichten als Hugh Masekela en de bij ons wellicht wat minder bekende Brenda Fassie\, Bushi Mlongo en het duo Letta Mbulu en Caiphus Semenya. DESCRIPTION:For the past 40 years\, África Negra has undoubtedly been the main ambassador of music from São Tomé & Príncipe. The band is beloved for their own inimitable soukous style and well known in Portuguese-speaking countries and their diaspora. This style is a mixture of the heavenly\, sultry São Tomé rumba or soukous with blissful shoots of highlife. So on 8 March\, they will definitely make it a party at GROUNDS! \nAfrica Negra still partially uses their old instruments and vintage guitar effect processors\, so their distinctive original sound from the 1980s is still going strong. The band went through many line-up changes throughout the past decades\, leaving Leonidio Barros\, the groundbreaking guitarist who helped in defining the band’s sound\, the only original band member since the 70s. But also with this new line up\, the band still sounds as fresh and festive as 50 years ago. \nIn 2019\, they released a new album called Alia Cu Omali\, their first in over 20 years\, which comprises a series of old classics that were never properly recorded\, just “materialized” in live concerts in the 80’s\, and were now recorded in studio between Lisbon and São Tomé. DESCRIPTION:Richard Bona en Metropole Orkest zijn terug! Onder leiding van honorair dirigent Vince Mendoza spelen de charismatische bassist en het orkest een naadloze mix van muzikale werelden en stijlen.\nNet als het Metropole Orkest staat Richard Bona bekend om zijn liefde voor het mixen van jazz met zijn muzikale roots en invloeden van wereld- en popmuziek. Bona begon in Kameroen als een multi-instrumentalist\, de muziek van Jaco Pastorius inspireerde hem zich te specialiseren als bassist. Gedurende zijn carrière is hij constant bezig zijn muzikale wereld uit te breiden door samen te werken met artiesten als Joe Zawinul\, Salif Keita\, George Benson\, Chaka Khan\, Pat Metheny\, Quincy Jones en Alfredo Rodriguez.\nHet orkest en de bassist zijn geen vreemden van elkaar. Metropole Orkest nodigde Bona uit als solist voor zijn International Arrangers Workshop in 2013 en vond elkaar daar in de visie op muziek als universele taal. Na opnieuw het podium te hebben gedeeld tijdens de Quincy Jones Prom in 2016 en de tour door Nederland in 2023\, hebben ze nu het perfecte moment gevonden om opnieuw werken aan het creëren van een rijke mix van muziekstijlen. Met het Metropole Orkest brengt Richard Bona orkestrale versies van zijn beste werk en nieuw gecomponeerde muziek.

Under his wing\, Samba Touré made a shift towards more traditional music and became one of West Africa’s leading musicians. His debut album Fondo\, a 100% traditional Songhoy album\, is a fine testament to this. \nOn his new album Baarakelaw\, to be released in autumn 2024\, Samba Touré blends traditional music with blues rock\, psychedelic elements\, ballads and love songs in an eccentric way. The album is an ode to the small traders in Bamako\, a group often overlooked but extremely crucial to social cohesion in Mali. Zijn latere albums\, zoals ‘Albala’en ‘Wande’\, oogstten lof wereldwijd. \nTouré’s woestijnblues kenmerkt zich door melancholische gitaarriffs en hypnotiserende ritmes\, een ode aan de Sahara. Als vertegenwoordiger van Malinese muzikale tradities treedt hij internationaal op\, en als activist zet hij zich in voor de culturele en sociale rechten van de Toearegs in het noorden van Mali.
