DESCRIPTION:We are proud to annouce the speaker for the 2nd Nelson Mandela Lecture: Nigerian writer\, satirist and lawyer Elnathan John (b. 1982). As a remarkable and dynamic voice\, John is a multiple award winning author. His essays and blogs are published by The Guardian\, Sunday Trust\, Le Monde Diplomatique\, The Economist\, ZAM Magazine and Chimurenga Chronic amongst others. As an independent thinker and a witty critic of power abuse\, oppression and self-aggrandizement\, John  is feared for his sharpness and admired for his courage and superb writing.  \nHis first novel\, Born on a Tuesday\, was published in 2015 by Cassava Republic and translated into German and French\, followed this year by Be(coming) Nigerian and\, very recently\, his first comic book in collaboration with Alaba Onajin: On Ajayi Crowther Street. Also in 2019\, John was a judge of the Man Booker International Prize for Literature.  \nThe Nelson Mandela Lecture is a ZAM initiative. Patrons Femke Halsema (Major of Amsterdam)\, Conny Braam (writer\, former President of the Dutch Anti Apartheid Movement)\, Adriaan van Dis (writer)\, Hennah Draaibaar (producer)\, Marjan Goslings (former judge)\, Zakes Mda (writer\, artist)\, Mpho Tutu (reverend) and Henk Wals (director of the International Institute for Social History). SUMMARY:Informatiebijeenkomst DANSreis naar Uganda.
DESCRIPTION:Van 24 juli tot en met 7 augustus 2020 organiseert Studio LionPaw een DANSreis naar Centraal en Oost Uganda.\nDe reis zit dit keer tjokvol dans\, dans\, dans!\nJe krijgt 9 lessen van elk 3 uur door verschillende lokale docenten\, zowel traditionele Afrikaanse dans als modern/contemporaine dans.  \nWe gaan naar Kampala en Jinja (Oost Uganda). De dansdocenten komen uit Uganda en Rwanda en bij de lessen is er muzikale begeleiding op verschillende instrumenten van traditionele stammen uit Uganda.  \nIn Kampala blijven we een aantal dagen op dezelfde plek. In de ochtend is er 3 uur dansles\, in de middag kun je lekker relaxen of de omgeving verkennen. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld het bruisende nachtleven van Kampala ontdekken\, naar de markt gaan\, een sloppenwijk bezoeken of gewoon lekker relaxen in de tuin.\nWe maken een uitstapje naar Jinja\, waar we een aantal dagen verblijven en dansen. Jinja ligt aan het Victoriameer in het oosten van Uganda en staat bekend om de oorsprong van de Nijl.\nTerug in Kampala is er voldoende tijd om souvenirs te kopen en dansoptredens bij te wonen.  \nNeem gerust je vriend/vriendin/partner mee naar de bijeenkomst als zij ook interesse hebben. SUMMARY:Isaiah Lopaz - Spheres & Circles\, Circles & Spheres(performance)
DESCRIPTION:Orbiting around race\, gender\, sexuality\, and cultural heritage. Navigating the experiences of Black bodies moving through time and space. \n‘Spheres & Circles\, Circles & Spheres’ (formerly titled ‘Portrait Noir’) is an ongoing multilocal\, intergenerational\, dialogue that centers the perspectives of Black people working in a variety of different fields including art\, academia and activism. Themes and subject matter are explored through indigenous and diasporic traditions and practices including but not limited to: ritual\, myth\, movement\, and the usage of Indigenous languages. \nEach performance is preceded by a closed conversation which takes place over dinner\, with previous discussions leading to a live exploration of topics such as: Black Sisterhood\, histories of homosexuality in Africa\, mothering Black daughters\, decolonising science\, Black art\, and relationships between cultural appropriation and misogynoir in gay/queer spaces. \nIn English \nCurated by Isaiah Lopaz\, Featuring Adeola Aderemi\, W.G.S.J Isenia\, Lili Mbida\, Kopano Maroga & Isaiah Lopaz \nIsaiah Lopaz is a queer\, African American\, interdisciplinary artist and writer of Geechee and Indigenous heritage who is currently a local of Brussels\, Berlin\, and Glasgow. His work has been featured in the 10th Berlin Biennale\, The HAU\, The Kunstenfestivaldesartes\, Tedx Uni Heidelberg\, and the 7th Afro-Europeans Biennal. Lopaz is currently writing his first novel\, a work of fiction concerned with race\, sexuality\, and migration. \nAdeola Aderemi is a multilingual\, multi-local and multi-format artist\, scholar\, activist\, and healer. She received her Masters of Science in Public Health at the Birmingham City University\, working as a curator\, yoga therapist and editor in chief of Distinguished Diva. Adeola is the founder of ‘Distinguished Diva’\, a collective that fosters community building\, communication\, outreach and global accessibility for women of African descent with a focus on telling and amplifying stories told by these women. \nLili Mbida is currently working as a caretaker in a plus spectrum resting home and is a singer at heart. \nKopano Morango is a performance artist\, writer\, cultural worker and co-founding director of the socio-cultural arts organization​ ​ANY BODY ZINE​. They are currently working as a programmer and dramaturg at​ ​Kunstencentrum Vooruit​ in Ghent. \nWigbertson Julian Isenia is a PhD candidate working at the University of Amsterdam. His work centers on the concepts of gendered and sexual citizenship beyond their legal conceptualisation in ​Curaçao ​and Bonaire through an analysis of cultural articulations and practices such as archival collections\, literature\, theater\, and cultural performance. He investigates how these cultural practices and articulations grapple with recent developments pertaining to sexual and gender minority rights\, tourism\, the colonial relationships with the Netherlands\, and their historical legacy.
