SUMMARY:The Bench - Prince K. Appiah
DESCRIPTION:Dit stuk is in het Engels gesproken. \nCan man be its own biggest enemy? Can a drive for something be so big that the car never starts moving in the first place? The bench is a play that deals with the complexities and hardships that come with being an artist. In it we see the perverse love relationship between an artist and his art\, where he gives more then he receives to the point where he almost can’t give any more. In a nutshell it is about an artist that can’t seem to get out of his own head and way. He questions himself\, his talent and even the position of the artist in society. The dilemma of wholeheartedly believing he is an artist tied with the fact that he can’t seem to make any art eats him alive and pushes him to the edge… Thru frequent visits to the bench he seemingly has random conversations with different people that end up not being so random after all. Can he wake up out of his nightmare or has the damage been done? \nThe Bench is a play written & directed by Prince K. Appiah\, a master drama student at the royal conservatoire of Antwerp. It stars himself alongside actors Daniel Djissenou\, Gloria Abena Biney and Fadil Siraj Cole.

SUMMARY:Ogutu Muraya - On Thin Ice (performance)
DESCRIPTION:As Ogutu Muraya moves from Nairobi to Amsterdam to begin his Master’s studies\, he starts keeping a diary. What starts as an exercise to map and locate his inner self grows into an extensive personal archive. Muraya’s stay in the Netherlands turns out to be\, as he says\, “beautiful\, complex and painful – an amalgam of paradoxical experiences”. Back in Nairobi now\, he is in the process of turning his ever-expanding diary into a kind of fragmented memoir in which he seeks to understand the challenges of his diaspora experience. \nOn Thin Ice is a performance reading of an excerpt from Ogutu’s ongoing book project. This summer Ogutu took a stand against the Schengen system. As such\, rather than read himself\, he invited the Brussels-based performer Quinsy Gario to read his text\, a statement describing the reasons he doesn’t travel to Europe anymore. \nThe collaboration between Quinsy Gario and Ogutu Muraya is a symbiotic practice in which private writings and public readings create a feedback loop\, which in turn generates new material for the readings. \nOgutu Muraya is a writer and theatre-maker whose work is embedded in the practice of orature. He studied International Relations at USIU-Africa and graduated in 2016 with a Master in Arts at DAS Theatre in Amsterdam. His performative works and storytelling have featured in theatres and festivals across different countries. On Thin Ice marks a return of Ogutu’s work to Beursschouwburg\, the artist having previously presented here in 2017 (Because I always feel like running) and in 2018 (Fractured Memories). \nQuinsy Gario is an activist as well as a visual and performance artist from the Dutch Caribbean. His most well-known work\, Zwarte Piet Is Racisme (2011–2012)\, critiqued the general knowledge surrounding the racist Dutch figure Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) and. Quinsy has an academic background in Gender Studies and Postcolonial Studies and is a graduate of the Master Artistic Research programme at The Hague’s Royal Academy of Art. \nIn English\n70′ \ntickets\n€12/€9 reduction / €6 student\nbit.ly/ogutumuraya \nfind out more\nEN beursschouwburg.be/en/events/ogutu-muraya-on-thin-ice/\nNL beursschouwburg.be/nl/events/ogutu-muraya-on-thin-ice/\nFR beursschouwburg.be/fr/events/ogutu-muraya-on-thin-ice/

SUMMARY:Benefiet dansdag Afrika

SUMMARY:Mamela Nyamza - Black Privilege (dance)
DESCRIPTION:Legal trial\, spiritual ritual\, dance performance. Mamela Nyamza invokes strong women and powerful figures from the struggle for African independence. \nThe dancer\, choreographer and activist Mamela Nyamza has caused quite a stir on the international scene for a number of years now. She consistently places her personal biography as a black African lesbian mother within the general debate about the failed rainbow nation of South Africa\, where racism and machismo are both regaining strength along with the divisions between high and tribal culture and between different linguistic and tribal regions. Instead of rapprochement\, reconciliation and the exchange of views\, this remarkable artist born in Cape Town in 1976 detects greater compartmentalization\, stricter racial separation and a climate of fear now exerting a firm grip over a national that was once a model of the post-colonial idea. \nIn this new work Mamela Nyamza focuses her attention on the hypocritical structure underlying our societies in which everyone is permanently judged and pre-judged. Switching back and forth between a ritual in which she summons up various aspects of strong women and a court process in which powerful figures are held to account for their horrific deeds\, Mamela Nyamza blurs the boundaries between spirituality and the law. Rejected and unrecognized heroines of the African struggle for independence are brought back to life\, judged and perhaps also celebrated. \nLanguage no problem\n60 min \ntickets\n€14/ €11 reduction / €7 student\nbit.ly/mamelanyamza \nfind out more\nEN beursschouwburg.be/en/events/mamela-nyamza-black-privilege/\nNL beursschouwburg.be/nl/events/mamela-nyamza-black-privilege/\nFR beursschouwburg.be/fr/events/mamela-nyamza-black-privilege/

SUMMARY:Her(e) X Heart of Africa
DESCRIPTION:DUTCH BELOW\n—————————————————————————————–\nThe theater performance her(e) is based on an experiment in which the writer brought: twenty black female artist\, actresses and activist together. The writer interviewed the ladies for the infamous magazine Summer. The topics of the interview varied very much. During the interview they talked about the world\, but also about their first and their last experiences of… (fill in) the basis that Dalilla Hermans and actress Abigail Abraham used for her(e) were the writings and recordings of this interview. \nHermans was born in Rwanda and adopted into a white family\, Abraham grew up in a Caribbean-Belgian family. What does it mean\, being “here”\, and being female? They might talk about straightening their curls\, about white partners\, or about being creative in white spaces as little islands of black. They might talk about how difficult it is to translate those experiences to a (white) audience. Or they might not talk about any of these things. Expect it to be painful or funny\, intimate or political\, probably all of it. \nIn short her(e) is a performance about idenity and solidarity. A story that talks about family and the importance of choice\, because can we at times chose our family? \nUsually this event is € 18\,- but we have a set amount of free tickets for our Heart of Africa students. Would you like to attend this activity\, send an email to sv.tribez@gmail.com. In here\, include your name and program\, and then we will put you on the list. If the activity is full\, we will put you on the spare-list.
