Belgian-Congolese Marie Daulne is an artist of many talents: she’s a singer\, composer\, activist\, and teacher of vocal polyphony. Since the early ‘90s\, she’s been at the helm of Zap Mama – a polyphonic female a capella quintet with which she conquered world stages and even garnered a Grammy nomination. Daulne also launched the term ‘Afropean’ to name the existence of a bicultural generation of Afro-Europeans. She introduces the world to her experience of ethnically influenced music and fashion. \nFor the last 25 years\, Zap Mama toured the United States\, Japan and Europe. The band performed and worked with top artists such as The Neville Brothers\, Al Jarreau\, Talib Kweli\, Common\, Bilal\, Questlove\, Tony Allen and Bobby McFerrin. Over the years\, the frontwoman moved away from a capella and she and her band evolved increasingly more toward an original and unique mix of European\, American and African rhythms and traditions. \nWhile living in New York\, in 2004 she released her fifth album Ancestry in Progress\, which was produced by The Roots and marked a new highlight: the wonderful single Bandy Bandy with Erykah Badu that topped the Billboard World Music charts for weeks on end. SUMMARY:TUTU PUOANE NEW QUARTET - 'WRAPPED IN RHYTHM'
DESCRIPTION:Zangeres Tutu Puoane stond met diverse groepen in Paradox. Nu komt ze met haar New Quartet waarvoor ze inspiratie opdeed uit de poëziebundel In A Ribbon Of Rhythm van Lebogang Mashile. Het werk van haar Zuid-Afrikaanse landgenote maakte al jaren diepe indruk op Puoane en elke keer als ze het las\, hoorde ze muziek. Uiteindelijk schreef ze nieuwe songs gebaseerd op haar favoriete gedichten uit Mashile’s bundel die ze in Paradox gaat uitvoeren met Ewout Pierreux (piano)\, Clemens van der Feen (bas) en Dré Pallemaerts (drums). \nHet resultaat is een gloedvol repertoire op haar eigen Afrikaanse kruispunt van singer-songwriting\, jazz en soul. Deze nieuwe muziek wordt komende zomer vereeuwigd op een album dat Wrapped In Rhythm zal heten en zal worden geproduceerd door de legendarische Amerikaanse muzikant/bassist/producer Larry Klein\, bekend van onder meer zijn samenwerking met Joni Mitchell\, Melody Gardot en Madeleine Peyroux. De open en losse structuren van de songs maken een erg vrije en spontane muzikale benadering mogelijk. Artistic heirs to Philip “Malombo” Tabane and Batsumo\, they give contemporary voice to the ancestral traditions of indigenous people. Jazz sounds of 1970s and ’80s productions replaced by hip-hop influences and punk-rock energy\, taking the listener views of modern Africa. They tackle the hars realities of the voiceless\, especially the plight of the uneducated workers at the bottom of the social food chain. BCUC taps intro the elusiveness of the spirit world of ancestors by which they are inspired. The Africa portrayed by BUC is not poor\, but rich in tradition\, rituals and beliefs.

Together\, they present a bold lineup of DJs and live artists\, in collaboration with Reset. \nHow to bring together two vastly different sonic universes without losing their essence?\nMalian kora master Ballaké Sissoko and Italian composer Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch have very much succeeded in fusing their two worlds: kora music and electronic soundscapes. The two musicians go in search of common roots\, seeing the West African string instrument as seed and electronics as sunlight. Bianchi Hoesch live records the acoustic kora and envelops it with layers of electronics.  \nFar from being opposites\, the two musical worlds merge into a meditative yet compelling performance. A sound collab that fits perfectly within the Belgian-Dutch music label Rebel Up!\, co-organisers of the evening. \nKora Days is a collaboration with Muziekpublique and Reset.
