DESCRIPTION:Zangbeto is a pack of young wolves who get everyone dancing with their infectious fusion of modern jazz and West African rhythms. On 12 September in GROUNDS\, they are going to take us on a vibrant and authentic journey to the musical heart of Togo. \nZangbeto was formed in 2021 after three young Togolese musicians met during a musical residency with Peter Solo\, the renowned frontman of Vaudou Game. Afterwards\, Joachim Amouzou (piano)\, Honoré Dafo (bass) and Henoch Fafadji (drums) soon got the chance to join the prestigious JazzUp training programme in Vienna. During their travels around Europe\, they also met French trumpeter Félicien Bouchot and guitarist Romain Baret and the band evolved into a quintet. \nThey drew inspiration for the group name from Benin culture\, where Zangbeto are spiritual creatures who guard the safety of the town during the night by chasing away evil spirits. That somewhat dark and mysterious character can also be heard on their debut album Ezo\, which embodies the fire spirit from Togolese voodoo culture. DESCRIPTION:Mulatu Astatke staat bekend als de vader van de Ethiopische jazzmuziek\, en dat is niet voor niets. Op alle belangrijke instrumentale albums uit de hoogtijdagen van de Ethiopische jazz in de jaren zeventig speelt hij mee. De nu 81-jarige muzikant kreeg zijn muzikale vorming in Londen en New York\, en in Boston was Astatke de eerste Afrikaanse student aan het gerenommeerde Berklee College of Music. Daar combineerde hij jazz\, latin en traditionele Ethiopische muziek. Terug in zijn thuisland introduceerde hij instrumenten als de vibrafoon\, keyboard\, conga’s en de bongo in de muziek. Maar het zijn vooral de groovende\, Ethiopische melodielijnen die Astatke in de Amerikaanse jazz bracht waar hij om geroemd wordt. Hij stond met grootheden als Duke Ellington en Alice Coltrane op het podium. Nog altijd inspireert zijn muziek menig muzikant en zijn liedjes worden dan ook veelvuldig als samples gebruikt door artiesten als Nas\, Damian Marley en Kanye West. Bij het grote internationale publiek brak Astatke (opnieuw) door\, toen vanaf eind jaren negentig de Ethio-jazz heruitgaven van de compilatieserie ‘Éthiopiques’ verschenen en zijn muziek in 2005 werd gebruikt voor de soundtrack van Jim Jarmusch’ film ‘Broken Flowers’. \nIn 2025 start zijn afscheidstournee en komt ‘Mulatu Plays Mulatu’ uit\, een terugblik op zijn legendarische carrière. “Ik wilde Ethio Jazz wereldwijd verspreiden\, en dat is gelukt\,” zegt hij – een nalatenschap die ongetwijfeld blijft voortleven. \nMeer info & tickets: paradi.so/Mulatu-Astatke\nAlle genoemde tijden onder voorbehoud.

Onder zijn vleugels maakte Samba Touré de switch naar meer traditionele muziek en groeide hij uit tot een van de voornaamste West-Afrikaanse muzikanten. Zijn debuutalbum Fondo een 100% traditioneel Songhoy album is daar een mooi bewijs van. \nDe Muzikant uit het noorden van Mali staat bekend om zijn virtuoze gitaarspel en karakteristieke mix van Afrikaanse blues woestijnrock en traditionele Malinese klanken. Zijn melancholische liedjes bezingen de Sahara en zijn gezet op hypnotiserende ritmes. Touré zet zich naast zijn muzikale carrière in voor de rechten van de Malinese Toearegs van Mali.
